By the thousands, professional athletes from all over the country are seeking treatment or funding through California’s workers’ compensation system for brain injuries and other injuries sustained on the field.

Former players have filed more than 4,400 claims involving head and brain injuries since 2006 — seven times more than in the previous 15 years, according to a Times review of government records. About three-quarters of all new cases in California now involve brain injuries.
Many of these complaints come from former professional football players, brought by superstars such as Joe Theismann, Tony Dorsett and Earl Campbell, as well as unheralded teammates.
These lawsuits represent a major financial risk to National Football League teams. Research shows that repetitive head trauma from violent concussions can lead to dementia, Parkinson’s disease and other chronic conditions.
Now the NFL and five other professional sports leagues are close to limiting their liability significantly for such employee claims. They sought a state law that would prohibit players who played for foreign teams from enrolling in California.

The vote comes after the NFL agreed on Thursday to pay $765,000 to settle hundreds of lawsuits by former players who accused the league of hiding evidence of the long-term risk of concussions.
With nearly 4,000 pending claims from former players, the total cost of football injuries in California could reach $1 billion.
Many out-of-state workers file benefits in California because they cannot do so elsewhere. Limitation laws are less restrictive in California than in other states, and long-term injuries, including traumatic brain injury, are covered.
Until now, former players were eligible to apply for benefits even if they played for foreign teams and competed in California a few times during their careers, and have been saying so for decades.

But club officials, along with team owners, worry that long-term care costs for seriously ill former players could raise insurance costs, eat into profits and force changes in the sport.
Together, the six teams have an annual revenue of $24 billion. Brook Gardiner, a staff attorney for the NFL, said a study conducted by the league last year found that claims filed in California by football players cost an average of $250,000 to settle.
With nearly 4,000 pending claims from former players, the total cost of football injuries in California could reach $1 billion, not including players who have not yet drafted.
