“european Health Insurance Card (ehic): Benefits For Cross-border Healthcare” – The European Union has launched its traffic light system to restart international travel between member states. As we begin to travel again and learn to live around COVID-19, it’s not necessary to have insurance for every eventuality and know what you’re eligible for.
We always recommend getting travel insurance before your trip. In addition to travel insurance, we recommend applying for (or renewing!) a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
“european Health Insurance Card (ehic): Benefits For Cross-border Healthcare”
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is a free card that gives you access to free or reduced-price healthcare in other EU or EEA countries. The card does not replace travel insurance, as it only covers essential medical treatment.

Depending on the country you are visiting, you may pay the standard or partial cost of the health care services you receive. This is called sickness benefit.
If you don’t have a valid EHIC card or have been charged incorrectly, you can apply for a refund straight away on your return to Ireland. In addition, if you use personal medical care during your trip, you will not be charged any compensation.
If you have not yet applied for a medical care card, please download and complete this application form and send it to your local health office.
If your EHIC has expired and you are at the same address, you can easily renew your EHIC online. All you need is your PPSN and EHIC number, both of which are on your existing card.

As mentioned above, the EHIC only covers essential healthcare. If you contract COVID-19 abroad and need private care or repatriation, the EHIC will not cover this.
Some countries, such as Portugal, the Canary Islands, Turkey and Thailand, are offering their own COVID-19 insurance to lure tourists back. We always recommend taking out new travel insurance at least 2-4 weeks before the trip.

Since the EU election in 2016, there has been considerable uncertainty over whether free healthcare for British tourists will continue after the Brexit transition period.
Your Passport To Healthcare: Get Access To Healthcare In Any Eu Country With The European Health Insurance Card
The European Health Insurance Card (Ehic) will be phased out and replaced by the Global Health Insurance Card (Ghic), which is also free. Ehics card holders can continue to use them as normal, as both cards give the holder access to free medical or financial treatment in EU countries and Switzerland (in any case, the latter greatly affected). However, check if your Ehic is still available – millions are set to expire in 2023. If you don’t have an Ehic, you need to get a Ghic.
British travelers benefited from free or low-cost treatment in several other countries – first through the Treaty and later, when the UK joined the then EEC in 1973, through the European Treaty.
In 2004, the European Union introduced the Ehic, a card that shows the right to health care at the same time as citizens. It’s free for EU citizens, including (post-Brexit) UK residents.
Perhaps ironically, British travelers lost ties to three non-EU countries – Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein – but not to the EU27 or Switzerland. The United Kingdom and the European Union will continue to provide “benefits in kind” to citizens of the other side if these benefits are “necessary for health reasons during their stay”. In other words: the need for health care? You’re right.

It is important that you are not entitled to a valid European Health Insurance Card. Ehic is the only easy way to prove that you are entitled to treatment.
You can apply for a UK Global Health Insurance Card (Ghic) from the NHS portal on the Ehic app or by calling 0300 330 1350. The card is free. Do not use other sites: they can get money.
You can try to apply for its renewal – but you will be directed to apply for Ghic as it has replaced Ehics.
The EU says: “If necessary, you will still receive the care you need to help you continue your work without having to return home for treatment.”
What Is The European Health Insurance Card?
If you have an existing Ehic, it is valid until its expiry date. If yours has expired or you don’t have one yet, you still have retention rights.
For treatment abroad, you must apply for a Provisional Reimbursement Certificate (PRC). This is confirmation from the NHS that you are eligible for healthcare.
To get one, you or your partner or family member should call NHS Healthcare Services on +44 191 218 1999 during office hours (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm).
You must have your national insurance number and the name of the hospital or other hospitals currently treating you. The letter is sent by e-mail (or preferably by fax) to the clinic.
Uk Government Launches Ehic Replacement
All emergency care, including complications from pregnancy – unless you are traveling abroad specifically to give birth.
In addition, medical treatment recommended for certain diseases – especially kidney dialysis, oxygen therapy and chemotherapy – is covered as before.
Note that this only covers the EU27 countries and Switzerland – so not Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, which are members of the Schengen area but not the European Union.
Nope. It’s easy to get treatment. You should not be sent home for free if you become seriously ill or have an accident. Only travel insurance will cover this.
Popularity Of The European Health Insurance Card Increasing
Another advantage of reimbursement healthcare is that the price of travel insurance does not increase significantly.
Travel insurance offers many benefits in addition to local medical care, including cancellation, loss or theft coverage and, in extreme cases, medical evacuation. The government warns: “Ehic and Ghic do not replace travel insurance.”
Leading travel group Abta warns: “Getting travel insurance is very important to you when booking a holiday, whether it’s a domestic or international trip.”
But older travelers, especially those with pre-existing conditions, may reasonably choose not to insure travel to Ghic-covered destinations – if they are willing to insure themselves against other risks. Remember that using wind to restore health costs thousands of pounds.

You can apply or renew your card via the website www.gov.uk. In addition to the usual information, you should also have the person’s National Insurance number or NHS number. Then follow the instructions and voila! You all have an EHIC card.
If you manage to land on a site that asks you to pay to apply for an EHIC, you’re in the wrong place. EHIC is free. You don’t have to pay.
Everything You Need To Know About The Ghic, The Post Brexit Health Insurance Card
The EHIC gives you access to government healthcare in all EU countries and Switzerland at a reduced price or free of charge. This gives you access to the same government health care that the country’s citizens get. For example, if you live in a country where seeing a doctor is free, it’s also free for you with your EHIC.
During my holiday in Mallorca I developed mastitis, which I like to call breast mould. Those with curvy boobs know it’s amazing! So I don’t want to waste time, I’m eager to go to the doctor and get fixed.
Once I found out where the doctor’s office was, I just asked to see the doctor in my best Spanish and tried to tell them I had a moving birthmark. They took my name and checked my EHIC card which was already full and I was waiting for the doctor. It’s really easy and costs nothing.
Be careful though, the hotel and many people I spoke to tried to refer me to a private hospital in town. There are also posters and business cards advertising these services in and around the hotel. It can be confusing but these people don’t accept EHIC and you have to pay. It is important to clarify that you are applying for government-funded health care providers.
